RESEARCH // Teen Vaping
Study findings suggest that not only do vapor products NOT act as a gateway to teen smoking, but those who do vape would have otherwise been smoking without access to vapor products. Vapor products “may be an important tool for population-level harm reduction.”
Congrats @nasokol on your intriguing @NTR_Journal paper showing "vaping is largely concentrated among non-smoking youth who would likely have smoked prior to the introduction of e-cigarettes". @BrownCAAS #BehMedRI https://t.co/6AZhqYBXfz https://t.co/NNFzunxTcw

RESEARCH // Exposing Anti-Vaping Research Bias
Bloomberg-funded site unsurprisingly provides a platform for UW’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation op-ed filled with misrepresentation of data, unscientific propaganda and misinformed speculation.
The @IHME_UW stance on tobacco harm reduction is unimpressive, illiberal, and not really worth paying attention to, but whoever runs their Twitter account gets amusingly testy when informed people question it. https://t.co/ZU66rQU9RY

TOBACCO HARM REDUCTION // Consumer Advocacy
The upcoming E-cigarette Summit (US), which discusses and analyses research and policies directly affecting vapor product consumers, once again lacks the voice of consumers at the table, but Cliff Douglas is kindly giving this message to them for us:
The agenda is here: https://t.co/LvFbwA6Cda. As my presentation description says there, we must listen to the pleas of consumers whose voices have been wrongly ignored, distrusted, rejected, and too often
dismissed as serving the interests of the “tobacco industry.”— Cliff Douglas (@cdoug) May 19, 2021

IN THE NEWS // FDA
The agency has released a list of vaping products allowed to remain on the market during the one-year grace period for products that on the market before Aug. 8, 2016 and for which a Premarket Tobacco Application (PMTA) was submitted.
Let’s see, FDA originally projected PMTAs would be filed for 50 product SKUs. I think Bob Uecker nailed this one. pic.twitter.com/SdBtxLwuet

AROUND THE WORLD // Netherlands
The Dutch government has banned flavored vapor products, a decision made by ignoring real science, instead believing the unproven propaganda that youth vape “because of” flavors, vaping leads to smoking and risks outweigh the benefits.
The Netherlands is pushing a flavor ban through Parliament, despite massive opposition during public comment. https://t.co/hWvbrjX13L

COMMENTARY: WHO Reasserts Anti-Vaping Stance Ahead of World No Tobacco Day by Alex Norcia, Filter Magazine
Tone-deaf WHO also implies nicotine consumers are “losers.”
In a press release that blends conspiracy theories, bad science, and wholly inadequate alternative measures, the WHO once again shows it is not fit for purpose.”
